Sakna dýrin okkar?

Biblían fjallar ekki um það en kona að nafni Ellen White sem ég trúi að var spámaður sem Guð sendi fyrir okkar tíma sagði þetta um þetta efni:

The intelligence displayed by many dumb animals approaches so closely to human intelligence that it is a mystery. The animals see and hear and love and fear and suffer. They use their organs far more faithfully than many human beings use theirs. They manifest sympathy and tenderness toward their companions in suffering. Many animals show an affection for those who have charge of them, far superior to the affection shown by some of the human race. They form attachments for man which are not broken without great suffering to them

Aðeins dýraeigendur skilja hversu mikið þessir ferfætlingar geta þýtt fyrir þá sem eiga þá. Sérstaklega þá sem eru einmanna. Eitthvað sem ég sé mikið af hérna í Englandi þar sem það er frekar algengt að heimilislausir hafa hunda með sér og svo sér maður þau kúra saman þegar það er kalt. Ég hef svo mikla andúð á þeim sem geta ekki sýnt öðru fólki skilning í þessum málum.

"Those who eat flesh are but eating grains and vegetables at second hand; for the animal receives from these things the nutrition that produces growth. The life that was in the grains and the vegetables passes into the eater. We receive it by eating the flesh of the animal. How much better to get it direct by eating the food that God provided for our use!" (1905)

Sköpunarsinni í stól vísindaráðherra

Ætli samviskufrelsið lifi af baráttuna við réttrúnaðinn?

Það er ekki af ástæðulausu að það var mikil barátta fyrir almenning að fá samviskufrelsi sem er í rauninni grundvöllur tjáningarfrelsisins, trúfrelsis og lýðræðis. Ástæðan er sú að stjórnvöld hafa oft ekki verið samþykkt því að sumar skoðanir fái að heyrast. Meirihluti almennings hefur sömuleiðis ekki verið til í að leifa einhverjum minnihluta til að gera og segja samkvæmt þeirra samvisku.  Svo nú í dag forvitnilegt að sjá hvort að samviskufrelsi presta verði fórnarlamb rétttrúnaðarins þar sem allir verða að finnast samkynhneigð í lagi; allar hugmyndir um umburðarlindi eru komnar á hvolf því fólk vill engan veginn umbera að sumir hafa aðra skoðun en það.
