Hönnun, alla leið niður

Rakst á þennann skemmtilega pistil, langaði að þýða hann en ákvað að það tæki of langann tíma og myndi líklegast aðeins skemma hann.  Svo hérna er hann á ensku og vonandi hafa einhverjir gaman af honum.

It’s not turtles all the way down; it’s design all the way down: from the constants of physics, to the production of life-permitting chemical elements in supernovae that are coincidentally unstable and spew out these elements to produce rocky planets on which life can exist, to the characteristics of carbon formed in a very narrow window of opportunity in stars, to the characteristics of water and light, to the fact that metals can be refined and smelted in temperatures reachable in carbon-based fire which made technology possible, to the electrical properties of conductors and semiconductors that made electronics and computers possible, to the fact that habitable planets represent the best platforms for cosmological discovery, to the fact that living things contain the most remarkable computer program ever written, the profundities of which we have not even begun to understand.

I presume that the picture at this point should be obvious. Design screams from every corner of modern scientific discovery. The real question is, Why do so many (especially academic intellectuals) work so hard to deny the obvious?

I have an answer to that question, and it should be obvious as well.

Alheimurinn fínstilltur svo að þú gætir verið til

Rannsóknir vísindamanna síðustu aldar hafa leitt menn að þeirri niðurstöðu að náttúrulögmálin eru fín stillt svo að við getum verið til.  Það eru mörg atriði sem þurfa að vera svo hárnákvæm að ef eitthvað væri aðeins örlítið öðru vísi þá væru við ekki til.  Sem dæmi um lögmál eða eiginleika efna sem eru stillt á hárfínann hátt þá má nefna: eiginleikar kolefnis, hlutfall massa nifteinda við rafeinda, jafnvægið milli þyngdarkraftsins og styrk segulsviðs í stjörnum. Ég ætla að reyna skrifa einhverjar greinar um nokkur þessara atriða en í þessu innleggi þá ætla ég að láta nægja að vísa í orð frægra vísindamanna um þessa fínstillingu náttúrulögmálanna.

Paul Davies (British astrophysicist): "There is for me powerful evidence that there is something going on behind it all....It seems as though somebody has fine-tuned nature’s numbers to make the Universe....The impression of design is overwhelming".

Alan Sandage (winner of the Crawford prize in astronomy): "I find it quite improbable that such order came out of chaos. There has to be some organizing principle. God to me is a mystery but is the explanation for the miracle of existence, why there is something instead of nothing.

John O'Keefe (astronomer at NASA): "We are, by astronomical standards, a pampered, cosseted, cherished group of creatures.. .. If the Universe had not been made with the most exacting precision we could never have come into existence. It is my view that these circumstances indicate the universe was created for man to live in."

Þetta segir mér ekki aðeins það að alheimurinn var skapaður heldur einnig að hann var skapaður með mig og þig í huga. Það segir mér það að skaparinn er persónulegur sem notaði sinn vilja og kraft til að búa okkur til og fyrir mig þá finnst mér það stórkostlegt.
